What is the 50/30/20 method
A guideline, not a strict rule.
The method splits your net income into three blocks: 50% for needs (housing, food, utilities, transport), 30% for wants (leisure, dining out, subscriptions) and 20% for savings and paying down debt. The trick is that you only have to keep an eye on three numbers, not twenty categories.
The percentages are a starting point. If you live somewhere with high rent, your needs will eat up more than 50% and you'll have to cut from wants before savings. If your income varies month to month, base it on your weakest month from the last year rather than the average.
Working out the split is the easy part. The hard part is checking every month whether you actually stuck to it, and that means tracking what you spend.
